Remember The Coward: Tie Domi

I watched the Devils score 3 late goals last night to welcome in Ilya Kovalchuk and stun the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs (keep trading away Toronto, it will never make a difference!) and I ended up speaking to a native New Jerseyan this morning (Nicholas) about all things Devils.  We reminisced about Scott Stevens, and it instantly made me think of something.  The Devils played the Leafs last night . . . Stevens was brought up this morning . . . ahh . . . my memory took me back to the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs when Tie Domi was a member of one of the dirtiest NHL teams – in fact – Domi should’ve been captain of that team just to symbolize how dirty they actually were.  Here’s the clip:

I remember jumping out of my seat and wanting to join Scott Stevens in ripping Tie Domi’s head off his body (unfortunately Stevens was in the box, but the refs should’ve let him out to brings justice to Domi’s head!).  This is clearly one of the dirtiest plays I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen Domi do some cheap garbage throughout his career.  Why?  Why remember and revisit such an ugly display of violence?  Domi has been out of the league for a long time now and the Maple Leafs are more harmless than ever – why bother bring this up?  Because I remember having a friend who idolized Tie Domi when we were young (crazy, right!?) – and I never understood it.  Because all of a sudden the NHL is now talking about “head shots” and making a big deal about it, and really Tie Domi was the worst offender and should not be remembered as a real hockey player, but as a coward-goon.  The guy was a crazy bastard, not a good hockey player.  There are players who play tough and hard and sometimes cross the line, but Domi intentionally erased all lines and purposely tried to injure people.  The play wasn’t even going on and Niedermayer couldn’t have been more unsuspecting . . . ugh . . . it disgusts me!

Bottom Line: I’m thinking of making this a new installment to my hockey section, “Remember The Coward” – I’ll use it to revisit some of the dirty players who should be remembered for what they truly are – pieces of garbage!  Tie Domi was a joke of a player and might actually be insane.  He’s also a coward. Kind of like Jarkko Ruutu of today’s NHL – an unstable guy who just so happens to play hockey – if you can call it that.  The only reason a team pays a guy like that to play is to hurt other people.  Sounds extreme, but what else could it be?  They say it’s to be a “pest” in order to goad other teams into taking penalties, but really . . . they cheap-shot people, and then hide behind their teammates when it comes time to man-up and drop the gloves.   Ahh . . . this is just my venting therapy . . . There’s no other reason for me writing this other than to release the negative energy of watching assholes like these throughout the years!  There’s so much awesomeness to hockey that too many Americans don’t realize, and here I am focusing on the negative . . . .

I will never again be able to bring myself to be happy for the Maple Thugs after the 02-03 playoffs; or was it 01-02?? I don’t know and that’s not important but what is important is that they should never win anything because of that dirty team they had. I hate them so much from that series that it still hasn’t worn off.

hahaha I’m right there with you man! And it was ’01-’02, technically the ’02 Playoffs. If my memory serves me well the ’03 Playoffs were against the Senators, then ’04 was Lightning, and ’07 (there was no ’05, of course – the entire year ceased to exist, and they missed ’06) was against the Sabres – ALL 1st round exits . . . naturally. Oh man . . . this depressed me!!
